GIRLS BASKETBALL

Last week’s Monticello High School girls basketball games followed the same pattern of the previous week; a tough loss followed by a strong performance in victory.

It’s all part of the growing process for the Panthers as they aim for the end of the regular season and the post-season.

“We are making progress with each game,” Monticello coach Donnie Kremer said. “We are in a very tough conference. I feel we are really close to putting it all together.”

First, Cascade rode a 24-6 second half advantage to a 45-19 win over Monticello Tuesday, Jan. 28 in Monticello.

The Panthers (6-6, 7-9) got off to a rough start against Cascade, falling behind 13-2 by the end of the first quarter.

“Cascade is just very active all over the place,” Monticello coach Donnie Kremer said. “They did a very good job of attacking us, and they did knock down some shots.”

The second quarter was better for Monticello, which outscored the Cougars 9-3 over the last four minutes of the quarter and trailed 21-13 at halftime.

“We did a nice job of moving the ball and attacking them,” Kremer said. “Plus, we did a better job of limiting them to one shot.”

Cascade put the game away, however, by holding the Panthers to just six second half points.

Sonya McCormick led Monticello with six points and eight assists. Ellen Schlarmann blocked three shots.

On Friday, Jan. 31, the Panthers had a strong start and carried it to a 54-39 home win over Wilton.

Monticello led 13-4 after the first quarter, and outscored the Beavers 18-11 in the third period to take a 40-24 lead.

“I thought we came out with much better intensity as a team,” Kremer said. “I thought we did a great job of playing as a team.”

Five Panthers had seven or more points, led by McCormick, who had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Kori Bohlken added 11 points and five rebounds.

“Kori and Sonya did a nice job all night. I thought Mandi (Miles) and Allie (Ries) did a very nice job as well,” the coach said. “I thought our bench was huge again. The girls came off the bench and did their job very well.”

Ries had eight points, while Traci Plummer and Miles had seven points each. Shay Stephen had six rebounds.

This is a four-game week for the Panthers, who were scheduled to play at Cascade Feb. 3 in a makeup game, and Feb. 4 at home against Mid-Prairie. Two more makeup games follow: Thursday, Feb. 6 at home against Bellevue (6.15 p.m. varsity start), and Saturday, Feb. 8 at home against Durant (3:30 p.m. varsity start).
