This past Monday, Joni’s Optical opened in Monticello, located at 615 S. Main St., Suite B, behind South Main Events. Owner Joni Eby has been in the business for 28 years, having previously owned and operated a shop in Monticello for 18 years. She decided it was time to return to her roots and reopen her shop.

“I have such loyal customers here,” she said, having been born and raised here in Monticello. “People have told me how much they missed my business and great service.”

Eby is a Certified Optician through the American Board of Opticianry (ABO).

Eby explained, “You don’t have to be licensed in the State of Iowa.” Every three years, Eby also has to complete 12 credits of continuing education courses to keep her certification. “I chose to get certified to keep up with all the latest technology in eyewear.”

With easy access and plenty of parking, Joni’s Optical has found the perfect place for her optical shop. Eby said hardly any work had to be done inside the building she utilizes. She had to purchase displays for the frames and sunglasses, furniture and equipment to complete the office.

Joni’s Optical offers many eye care products including contact lenses, eyeglasses, sunglasses (prescription and non-prescription), repairs, adjustments and designer frames. Eby said she would and does travel to customers’ homes for eyeglasses if they are not able to get out. She also visits the nursing home as well.

“I am here to accommodate,” she offered.

Down the road, she hopes to have a doctor satellite in to perform eye exams.

Compared to competitors, Eby said she offers decent pricing for glasses, including packages. She wants people to have more options in town versus going into the cities.

“I feel good at what I do and what I can offer,” said Eby. “I want to help people where I can and give back to the community.”

On Monday, June 25, Joni’s Optical will be hosting an open house, welcoming people to her business to see what she has to offer. Joni’s Optical is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 to 5 p.m. Eby is available after hours by appointment only.
