CROSS COUNTRY

Teams don’t often talk about dramatic improvement until a season has gone on for a while.

But things are a little different when you’re talking about the Monticello cross country teams.

Improvement was the key word as the Panthers blazed through the Gold Division (small-school) of the Cedar Rapids Prairie Invitational Saturday, Aug. 25. Monticello won both the boys and girls team titles.

“I was real pleased from top to bottom to see the improvement from our time trial (Aug. 8) to the Prairie Invitational,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said.

Some of the biggest improvements involved comparing this year’s times to those of last year in the same meet. Monticello’s boys, who won the Class 2A state championship a year ago, but this year’s Panther squad improved its team time (top five times combined) by 3:37 over its performance in the same meet last year, or an average of about 43 seconds per runner.

Similarly, the Panther girls had a team time more than three minutes faster than their 2011 time; nearly 40 seconds per runner.

Individually, several Panthers excelled. Michael Melchert was the Gold Division champion, with a time of 16:33. Nick Meyers had what Sauser called “a real breakout race,” finishing fifth on the team, and sixth in the division, in 17:18, breaking his personal record by 21 seconds. Jordan Loes was the top freshman in the Gold varsity race.

As a team, Monticello won the Gold Division easily, scoring 19 points to Anamosa’s 58. Had the meet been scored including all classes, the Panthers would have totaled 71 points, beating everyone except Linn-Mar (56).

“The boys showed they can run with any of the teams in any of the classes,” Sauser said.

On the girls side, Mandi Miles finished second in the division in 17:13, and another breakout-type performance was turned in by Jazmine Reynolds, who was third in 17:23, improving her 2011 time at Prairie by more than two minutes. Olivia Sunlin, in her first varsity race, was fourth on the team and fifth in the division.

Monticello was the Gold Division team champion with 20 points; Anamosa was second with 43.

“I was very pleasantly surprised by the varsity girls,” Sauser said.

The coach also pinpointed outstanding performances in the freshman-sophomore and junior varsity races.

For the boys, Matt Manternach, Zach Holmes and Jacob Bergman stood out in the freshman-sophomore race. For the JV boys, Brian Turnis was fifth overall.

In the girls fresh-soph race, Ellen Schlarmann was the top Monticello runner, taking eighth place in the division, and has “an incredible amount of potential,” the coach said.

“The training is paying off,” Sauser said.
