Conservation supporters are honored at awards banquet

The Jones County Conservation Board (JCCB) and the Jones Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) passed out awards during their annual banquet Wednesday, Aug. 22 at the Rotary Lodge in Wapsipinicon State Park, Anamosa.

The JCCB presented four Friends of Jones County Conservation awards; the SWCD presented awards in the Windbreak and Forestry Management categories, as well as presenting certificates to winners of the Conservation Districts of Iowa Regional Poster Contest.

Jones County Conservation Board awards

Phyllis and Don Tapken, Monticello – recognized for preserving and selling to the JCCB a 45-acre tract of land containing more than 40 species of greatest conservation need.

Duane and Cathie Mesch, Center Junction – recognized for volunteering the past six years as camp hosts at Central Park.

Scott and Cindy Lightner, Monticello – recognized for helping to raise more than $14,000 for purchase of a rescue and first response boat for the shallow rivers in Jones County.

George and Rose Pearson of Center Junction – recognized for selling 80 acres adjacent to Central Park to the JCCB, property that is very valuable to the park’s lake restoration effort.

Jones Soil & Water Conservation District Awards

Gin Ulferts, Anamosa – presented with the Farmstead Windbreak Award, for planting eight-tenths of an acre of CRP shelterbelt in 2005.

Kevin and Janet Schockemoehl, Cascade – presented with the Forestry Management Award for completing 10 acres of timber stand improvement (TSI) in 2011 and making plans for six more acres of TSI in 2012.

Caroline Olson, Monticello – Regional champion of the Conservation Districts of Iowa Regional Poster Contest for grades 2-3.

Lacy Smith, Anamosa – Regional champion of the Conservation Districts of Iowa Regional Poster Contest for grades 4-6.
