Monticello showed several other teams at the North-Linn Invitational what its best looks like.

Between the four Panthers squads that competed Saturday, Oct. 6 in Troy Mills (two varsity, two JV), they recorded 42 season best times and 33 personal bests.

Some of these were bests by considerable margins. Jazmine Reynolds led the varsity girls to a fourth place team finish, beating her personal best time by about a minute, and her 2011 North-Linn meet time by about 2:30. She was one of five varsity girls who set personal records.

For the JV girls, Kaela Weber and Taylor Reth both had times that were more than a minute faster than their previous records.

On the boys side, Ben Burds outran his previous personal record by about two minutes, while competing in the JV race.

As for the varsity boys, it was another dominating performance, totaling just 19 points and winning by 93. It was the fourth straight time the Panther boys had recorded a team score in the teens.

While Michael Melchert – last week’s KCRG-TV Athlete of the Week – was once again the individual winner, several Panthers were much closer to him. The top five Panthers were separated by just 26 seconds, the lowest figure of the season by about 20 seconds.

“It gives those 2-5 runners more confidence,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said. “If we can keep that spread as tight as that, it’s going to make that team even better.”

Ben Ahlrichs was just seven seconds behind Melchert, J.J. Frawley 12 seconds behind, Dallas Lumpa 13 seconds behind, and Nick Meyers 26 seconds behind.

For the girls, Reynolds edged teammate Ellen Schlarmann by just two seconds. Mandi Miles was the team’s third runner, followed by Cassi Britt and Kally Blake. All of these five had personal bests, and Natasha Eby had a season best.

“It was one of our best races of the year,” Sauser said of the girls varsity effort. “I was really happy with the way Ellen came back, and I continue to be amazed by Jazmine.

“The girls are looking like they’re starting to gel. They’re starting to show signs that they’re going to have it all together just when we need them to.”

The Panthers will compete in the Tri-Rivers Conference Meet Thursday, Oct. 11 at Fillmore Fairways. The varsity girls will run at 4:30 p.m., the varsity boys at 5 p.m., and both JV teams will begin at 5:30 p.m.
