In September, it was announced that Casey’s General Store Inc. was purchasing a number of Kum & Go locations throughout the Midwest, including the Kum & Go convenience store here in Monticello. Nov. 15 was the last day of business for Kum & Go in town. On Nov. 16, windows and doors were being boarded up, gas pumps were taken down and the property was about to close for good.
Bill Walljasper, Casey’s senior VP and chief financial officer, said Kum & Go wants to focus the company’s growth initiative on larger communities. This was then an opportunity for Casey’s to buy the 20-some Kum & Go stores.
Walljasper said the Monticello store would permanently close its doors. Contrary to popular rumor, Casey’s will not reopen the former Kum & Go store and turn it into another Casey’s in Monticello.
“We are looking to sell the property,” said Walljasper. He said in some cases, if the properties do not sell, they have donated the buildings to the cities for community centers or similar facilities.
“Keeping it open would not have been the best business decision,” said Walljasper. He said Casey’s already serves the Monticello community at its best.
As for the employees at Kum & Go, Walljasper said some made the decision to seek employment elsewhere. He said they were offered jobs at other Casey’s locations.
