Fire damages multiple downtown businesses

An early morning fire in downtown Monticello damaged and destroyed several businesses and apartments overnight. Fire crews from several departments responded: Monticello, Manchester, Hopkinton, Cascade and Anamosa. The cause and extent of damage is unknown at this time. The Red Cross was called in to assist those displaced by the fire. Apartment residents were taken to City Hall for shelter.

Businesses affected included: Keleher’s Jewelry, Tease Salon & Spa, Monticello Carpet & Interiors, Home Furniture Gallery. The worse of the damage was housed inside Monticello Carpet & Interiors.

The State Fire Marshal was called in to assess the damage and the possible cause of the fire. Monticello Police Chief Britt Smith commented that nothing was being ruled out at this point.
