Monticello ran up a 43-24 lead after three quarters, and went on to score a 50-36 victory to open the girls basketball season Tuesday, Nov. 20 at Tipton.

Paxtyn Keleher had 11 points and Lael Lubben added 10 to pace the Panthers (1-0). Both had six rebounds.

“It was nice to get a road win under our belts,” Monticello coach Donnie Kremer said. “I thought we played pretty well for our first game.”

The Panthers pulled to a 26-17 lead by halftime, and a 17-7 third quarter advantage broke the game open. It was a big win to start the season for a team that used several underclassmen.

“We had several players play that did not have any varsity experience (previously),” Kremer said. “I thought Sonya McCormick played very well for her first varsity game. Tessa Leibold had a very nice game coming off the bench. Paxtyn (Keleher) and Lael (Lubben) each had solid games.”

Keleher also had five assists and four steals. Bone made four steals. Bone, Miles and Schlarmann had two assists apiece.

The Panthers also had a strong defensive game, holding Tipton to just 26.8 percent shooting from the field (11-for-41).

Monticello did struggle at the free throw line, making just 11 of 26 attempts (42.3 percent.

“Our free throw shooting must get better,” the coach said. “We will not win many close games if we shoot the way we did.

“At times we showed very good discipline and at times we did not. We also need to do a better job finishing on the offensive end.”

Monticello was scheduled to play host to Cascade Nov. 27. Road games at Alburnett Nov. 30 and at Edgewood-Colesburg Dec. 4 will follow. After that, the next home game is Dec. 7 against Central City.
