Monticello had the privilege of opening the high school wrestling season with a pair of home meets.

However, the Panthers also had the dubious honor of facing two of the Tri-Rivers Conference favorites to start the campaign.

Alburnett, ranked first in Class 1A, handed the Panthers a 69-12 defeat in the opening dual. Monticello bounced back to give a good battle to highly-regarded Maquoketa Valley, but lost 46-36.

The Panthers had two days to recover from those losses before hosting the annual Dan Guilford Invitational Dec. 1. That was apparently enough time, as Monticello racked up 39 points to edge Dyersville Beckman by one point in a battle for second place in the six-team tournament.

Cedar Rapids Prairie JV won the meet, which was contested in a weight-class round robin format, by scoring 45 points.

Highlights for the Panthers on Saturday came from Jordan Barker, who won all five of his matches at 138 pounds; Logan McQuillen, who was 3-0 at 160; and Daniel Pike, who went 2-0 at 285.

Ben Ahlrichs posted a 3-1 record at 132. Going 2-1 for the day were Anthony Kinley (120) and Dalton Husmann (126). Colton Halder joined Barker in the 138-pound bracket as a JV wrestler, and went 3-2.

None of the Monticello wrestlers were able to go 2-0 in the double dual on Thursday. However, several Panthers went 1-1, including Wyatt Heims at 113, Kinley at 120, Ahlrichs at 132, Barker at 138, Paddock at 145, McQuillen at 160, Devin Arduser at 195 and 220, and Pike at 285.

The Panthers were scheduled to host Edgewood-Colesburg and Maquoketa Valley Dec. 6, and will compete in the Maquoketa tournament Dec. 8.
