Monticello looked for individual improvement more than overall team placing when it competed in the Zimmerman Invitational Wrestling Tournament Saturday, Dec. 8 at Maquoketa.

“With only taking seven wrestlers, I wasn’t concernced with the team score,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “I wanted to see improvement in our technique and attacking our opponents. Saturday was a good day overall.”

It was a big day for Logan McQuillen, who upped his record to 10-1 with a championship in the 160-pound weight class.

“Logan McQuillen had a great day,” Luensman said. “He continues to improve every time he walks on the mat.”

He wasn’t the only one. Dalton Husmann (120 pounds) and Daniel Pike (285) both had second place finishes, while Anthony Kinley (113) and Jordan Barker (145) both took third.

“Ben Ahlrichs (fifth at 132) battled back to beat a kid from (Cedar Rapids) Jefferson that beat him earlier in the day,” Luensman said.

As a team, the Panthers were sixth with 90 points.

The Panthers (1-3) also competed Thursday, Dec. 6 in a double dual meet at Monticello, and split two matches. They defeated Edgewood-Colesburg 57-18, and lost to Maquoketa Valley 42-30.

It was the second time in as many weeks that the Panthers had faced MV, which is ranked fifth in the state in Class 1A.

“We made some small improvements from the previous week and gave ourselves an opportunity to win,” Luensman said. “We also had some people change weights. Anthony Kinley, Jayson Hebdon and Jordan Barker had good performances.”

Because of the number of forfeits in the Ed-Co match, only two Panthers were able to wrestle twice and win twice. Kinley pinned both of his opponents at 113 pounds, and Husmann scored a fall and a major decision at 120.

Those who won twice, including once by forfeit, were Ben Ahlrichs at 132, Colton Halder at 138, Jordan Barker at 145, and Logan McQuillen at 160 and 170.

Monticello has a similar schedule this week, with a double dual Thursday and a tournament Saturday. The double dual is Dec. 13 at East Buchanan, and includes Central City. The tournament is at Lisbon Dec. 15.

Then, the Panthers have a final double dual meet Dec. 20 at Cascade (including North-Linn) prior to the holiday break.
