The Annual Great Christmas Giveaway, sponsored by the Monticello Area Chamber of Commerce and the Commercial Club, was postponed to Friday, Dec. 21, (originally scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 20) due to the area’s first major snowstorm of the winter season.

Leading up to this year’s Giveaway, the Chamber and Commercial Club did things a little differently. In the past, Santa Claus visited with boys and girls during the Giveaway. This year, Santa and his helper elves met with the young kids in the weeks leading up to the holiday. The Santa House was set up next to REM Electric on Dec. 6, 8, 13 and 15. In all, 265 kids came to see Santa this year! The Santa House proved to be a success!

During the Santa House dates, parents were able to register their children for a new kids prize that was given away during the chamber event on Dec. 21. Local businesses donated items to be placed inside a giant Christmas stocking. This year’s winners were Destiny Gaal, Lexie Gaal, Alexis Schultz and Preston Schultz.

As part of the Chamber’s holiday festivities this year, an exterior lighting contest was also held, open to anyone who lives within a 2-mile radius of Monticello. The entry categories included: Best Use of White Lights, Best Use of Colored Lights, Best Theme, Best Animation and Best Overall. Judging was held on Dec. 17 and 18.

Winners who received special Santa trophies for the lighting contest were: Best Use of White Lights, Stan and Sue Burrichter, 1022 Riverview Ct. Best Use of Colored Lights, Dennis and Linda Schrader, 602 W. Fifth St. Best Overall, Deb Hughes, 17996 Rainbow Dr.

Multiple prizes valued at $4,400 were given away. Prizes consisted of various amounts of Chamber Bucks (valued at 3,000) and a grand prize media package valued at over $1,300 (51-inch Samsung plasma TV and a Blu-ray player) and an overnight stay at AmericInn (valued at over $120).
