Wade Merfeld, 55, of Monticello, died Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, peacefully on his couch.
Friends called from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 23, 2012, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Monticello, where a funeral service was held at 4:30 p.m. Rev. Keith Birch will officiate.
A private burial will be held at a later date in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monticello. Wade was born Sept. 24, 1957, in Monticello, Iowa the son of Carl and Peg (Lewis) Merfeld. He graduated with the Class of 1976, from the Monticello High School. He began his working career at Julin Printing in Monticello, then took a few years off to travel with the carnival. Upon his return, he began at Cascade Die Mold (now Medplast) as a setup technician for the last 25 years.
Wade was an avid Hawkeye fan and loved taking pictures while on his travels. When describing Wade, everyone called him a big teddy bear with a heart of gold.
Surviving are his father, Carl; siblings: Dave (Carol), Dan (Lynn), Amy (friend Dave Johnson) Bartels, Brad (friend Tanda Foster), Gregg (Peg), all of Monticello; 12 nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews; and many aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his mother in 1988; a brother-in-law, Roger Bartels in 2009; a great-nephew, Justis Curry, in 2010; his grandparents; and a few aunts and uncles.
