It was a big week of dual meets for the Monticello High School wrestling team, which competed in five duals in three days, and won four of them.

Included were two wins in three matches at the Durant quadrangular Jan. 8, and a sweep of Tri-Rivers Conference opponents in a home double dual Jan. 10.

At the Marion tournament Jan. 12, the Panthers had two finalists, and one champion, Logan McQuillen at 160 pounds.

It was a tough week for the team, however, in terms of injuries, as Zach Timm, who had won six of seven matches, suffered a broken arm.

The hectic week began at Durant, where the Panthers lost to Durant 46-32, beat Northeast of Goose Lake by criteria (most pins) after the two teams tied 39-39, and edged Maquoketa 40-35.

Dalton Husmann won all three of his matches for the Panthers. Logan McQuillen also had three wins, including two pins, although the third match was a forfeit.

On Thursday, the Panthers knocked off Starmont 48-34, and beat Cascade 53-24. Anthony Kinley and Husmann recorded two pins apiece.

“Thursday I saw a lot of fight out of our guys, and we won some big matches,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “Sam Boyd wrestled a great overtime win to avenge a loss from just a week ago.”

Monticello also competed in the Marion Invitational Jan. 12. The team finished eighth, but had two finalists, with McQuillen winning the 160-pound championship and Daniel Pike finishing second at 285.

“Saturday was a good test to see what things we still need to work on,” Luensman said. “Logan McQuillen had a great tournament and dominated the field. Dalton Husmann and Daniel Pike also wrestled very tough with good wins.

“Colton Halder and Sam Boyd switched weight classes and stepped into the lineup with big wins throughout the week,” the coach said.

The team also competed in a junior varsity tournament Jan. 7 at Center Point-Urbana, and had four wrestlers win championships: Wyatt Heims, Paul Arnold, Boyd and Timm. Olivia Sunlin also picked up her first win of the season.
