There is no mistaking what lies ahead for the Monticello High School wrestling team. With the Panthers scheduled to host the Tri-Rivers Conference Tournament Saturday, Jan. 26; and with sectional (Feb. 2 at Dyersville) and district (Feb. 9 at West Delaware), it’s definitely “go” time.

“This is the time of year that we need to step it up and peak at the right time,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “I look forward to seeing how our team will respond. Attitudes are changing, and are moving in the right direction.”

To help prepare, the Panthers competed in two meets last week. They traveled to East Buchanan for a quadrangular event, and nearly swept all three opponents, but instead went 2-1.

“We should have been 3-0,” Luensman said. “We were winning in matches and got caught in some bad situations. I was pleased with the overall fight of our team. We have been focusing on learning to compete at our highest level at all times.”

The Panthers lost to East Buchanan 40-36, but defeated Midland 42-36 and Edgewood-Colesburg 66-12.

“Dalton Husmann and Anthony Kinley had a great night,” the coach said. “Sam Boyd and Luke Knipper continue to improve every time they hit the mat.”

At East Buchanan, Dalton Husmann and Ben Ahlrichs each went 3-0 with one pin, and Jordan Barker went 2-0 with one pin. Anthony Kinley and Sam Boyd both went 2-1 with two pins. Luke Knipper won by pin in the East Buchanan match.

On Saturday, the Panthers were in the tough John Byers Invitational at Midland, and placed fifth as a team. Daniel Pike won the championship at 285 pounds, Logan McQuillen was second at 160, and Ben Ahlrichs, Anthony Kinley and Dalton Husmann all took third place in their classes.

“Daniel Pike had a great tournament of wrestling smart, and controlled his way to a heavyweight championship,” Luensman said. “Ben Ahlrichs, Anthony Kinley and Dalton Husmann did a nice job of fighting back for third place after semifinal losses. Peyton Paddock had a great fifth place match.

“Saturday’s focus was on individuals and getting the toughest matches possible,” Luensman added. “Midland is a good tournament, and we had our ups and downs throughout the day.”

The Panthers are scheduled to compete in a double dual at North-Linn Thursday, Jan. 24, and will host the conference meet Saturday, beginning at 10 a.m.
