With a pair of big dual meet wins, and a fourth-place finish in the Tri-Rivers Conference Tournament, the Monticello wrestling team picked up some momentum heading into sectional and district competition.

The Panthers marched into North-Linn High School Jan. 24 and took away a pair of victories, beating North-Linn 51-18 and avenging two earlier losses against East Buchanan in a 44-30 win.

“Thursday was a great day,” Monticello coach Ryan Luensman said. “East Buc had clipped us twice, and it was great to get that win. We competed as a team the whole night.”

Picking up two wins in that double dual were Anthony Kinley, Dalton Husmann, Ben Ahlrichs, Jordan Barker, Lukas Wilson and Jayson Hebdon. Husmann and Ahlrichs each collected two pins.

Then came the conference meet, where the Panthers had three finalists and had six wrestlers finish in the top three. It added up to a fourth place finish overall with 149 points, just one point behind third place East Buchanan.

Alburnett cruised to the team championship with 330 points, and Maquoketa Valley was second with 221.

Reaching the finals for the Panthers were Logan McQuillen at 160 pounds, Kinley at 113 and Barker at 138. Each of them lost to Alburnett opponents in the final round. It was the second year in the conference finals for all three.

“I challenged the team to a top-three finish,” Luensman said. “The boys wrestled hard, and many placed above their seeds.

“Anthony Kinley has really turned it on. Lukas Wilson, Jordan Barker and Peyton Paddock all avenged losses from earlier in the year.”

Taking third place were Husmann at 120, Ahlrichs at 132 and Daniel Pike at 285. Devin Arduser was fourth at 195.

The Panthers will compete in the Class 2A sectional meet Saturday, Feb. 2 at Dyersville Beckman. The top two in each weight class will move on to the Feb. 9 district meet at West Delaware in Manchester.

“We’re going in the right direction, but we will be challenged at sectionals with No. 1 West Delaware there,” Luensman said. “Fighting for six minutes and facing every challenge head-on will be the key.”
