BOYS BASKETBALL

The toughest stretch of the regular season for the Monticello High School boys basketball team was the last one.

The Panthers played the final two games of the regular campaign against two strong foes, and suffered two losses; a 53-38 decision at home against Cascade Feb. 5; and a 69-45 loss at Northeast Saturday, Feb. 9.

In the Cascade game, things started out well for the Panthers (13-3, 14-7), who led 16-15 after the first quarter, and held a 22-17 lead with five minutes to play in the first half.

“They played a 2-3 zone to start with, and our kids feel very confident against their 2-3, that we can attack it,” Monticello coach Tim Lambert said.

Then it turned. A three-point basket for Cascade launched a 13-2 run that gave the Cougars a 30-24 lead by halftime.

“They switched to a 1-3-1, and we struggled to score,” Lambert said. “I thought we played very east-west (side-to-side), and were tentative. You’ve got to penetrate and make something happen.”

Defensively, Monticello’s man-to-man defense wasn’t effective, so the Panthers switched to a zone.

“We thought we’d give them a different look,” the coach said. “The zone was pretty effective. With three minutes left they had only scored 13 points in the second half.”

The Panthers also struggled to score, and the Cascade lead fluctuated between eight and 12 points for most of the fourth quarter. Cascade then made enough free throws at the end to put the game away.

Sawyer Herman scored 14 points, including 11 in the first half.

”He’s really shooting the ball well right now,” Lambert said.

Dallas Lumpa had 10 points and seven rebounds. Tim Norton had five points, four assists and two steals. Herman had four assists and two blocks.

Jared Manternach scored 22 points for Cascade, shooting 8-for-15 from the field. Lambert said the team tried to take other players away and make the Cougars’ Manternach beat them.

“And he did,” Lambert said. “You have to credit him with being a competitor and stepping up in that situation.”

There was little question about the biggest factor in Monticello’s lost at Northeast Saturday. The Rebels shot 11-for-14 from three-point range to pull away for the victory.

“I didn’t think we played that poorly defensively,” Lambert said. “Sometimes the other team just beats you. It seemed like they never missed.”

The Panthers trailed by just six points heading into the fourth quarter, but Northeast’s hot shooting led to a 30-12 fourth quarter advantage.

Herman again led Monticello, scoring 19 points. Jarrett Easton, Michael Melchert and Norton had six points apiece. Norton led the team in rebounds with nine.

Monticello awaits the winner of the Mount Vernon-Alburnett district quarterfinal game, which was scheduled for Feb. 11. The Panthers will play host to that victor in the district semifinals Thursday, Feb. 14 at 7 p.m.
