FEB. 27 OFF THE MARK COLUMN — MARK SPENSLEY, CO-PUBLISHER
I’m assuming everyone knows who I am writing about after reading my headline. And just in case you haven’t paid any attention to the Daytona 500 festivities this past week, the big news in NASCAR is Danica Patrick.
Ms. Patrick is the first lady of NASCAR right now and has been on the receiving end of the Daytona 500 hype machine all week long and rightfully so.
She set a couple of firsts on Sunday. One: first female to ever start from the pole position. Two: first female to lead a lap at Daytona. And three: she came pretty darn close to winning the great American race.
Okay all you die-hard racing fans. Are you or are you not a Danica Patrick fan? I’m officially throwing my hat in the ring and jumping on her bandwagon. Yes, she is easy on the eyes. Not going to lie about it here in this column, that’s part of the attraction.
But, all of a sudden she might be a contender. We all know surviving a Daytona 500 is a lot of luck and a lot of skill. Most of the time luck trumps skill during the big restrictor plate race.
Now I’m starting to think that the skill set is there. She’s had a couple of years to transition from Indy Car racing to the NASCAR circuit. She has taken her lumps and earned her wheels.
The good ole boys appear to have accepted her as well.
Plus she is a marketing companies’ golden nugget. You know the sponsors will be lining up if she is even an average driver. Right now Godaddy.com has figured this out. And she seems to have that pretty face splashed over numerous commercials.
I’m happy and excited for her and the sport. Racing definitely needs a kick in its behind. Ms. Patrick just might be the one doing the kicking this race season!
