Nov. 1, 1918 – April 4, 2013

Donald M. Pursell, age 94, of Chetek, Wis., formerly of Monticello, died April 4, 2013 at Knapp Haven Nursing Home, Chetek, Wis., surrounded by his step daughter, Sheri and husband, Gary.

There will be a celebration of life scheduled later this Spring.
Don was born Nov. 1, 1918 in Shenandoah, the son of Thurl and Ethel Pursell. In January 1941, he went into the Army, serving in North Africa, landing on Omaha Beach D-Day plus 3, the Battle of the Bulge and across the Rhine River into Germany. He was honorably discharged in July 1945. Upon his return to Iowa, he married his truest love, Emma Hanken in September 1945. Emma lost her battle with cancer in February 1978. Don married Eloise Mausser July 7, 1979, and she preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 2010.
Don farmed outside of Langworthy for 33 years. In 1984, Don and Eloise moved to Monticello, where he worked with Jack Fraser installing and repairing heating and cooling systems. Don spent 10 years working at McNeill Hardware in Monticello, where he finally retired in December 2010 at the ripe age of 91. After retirement, he moved to Chetek, Wis., to be close to his stepdaughter and her family.
Don enjoyed fishing, spending time with grandchildren, great-grandchildren and always sharing a story. There were always so many stories and it seemed no one ever got tired of him telling them over and over. Don had an infectious smile, laugh and a twinkle in his eye that made it irresistible not to listen to his stories. He loved a good cigar while sipping on a cold Leinie’s Honey Weiss.

Don is survived by his stepdaughter, Sheri Rushlo and husband, Gary of Chetek, Wis.; grandsons, John Miller (Sadie) and their daughters, Hailey, Reese and Olivia of New Market, Minn., Adam Miller (Rachael) and their sons, Owen and Grayson of Wake, Virg.; step-grandsons, Josh Rushlo (Katie) and children, Hayden and Riley of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Cory Rushlo and son Jack of St. Paul, Minn.; step-daughter-in-law, Delda Hershberger and children Greg, Amy, Abby, Gary, Erin and Heidi, along with their spouses and children; step-son, David Mausser (Marna) and grandchildren, Bob, Chuck, Julie and Dan, along with their spouses and children; also many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
In addition to his two wives, he was also preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Duane and Albert; and grandson, David Mausser.
The family would like to thank all of Don’s family and friends whether in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Virginia, Iowa and beyond, for their continued support, prayers and well wishes over the last three years. Also thank you and much gratitude to the staff at Knapp Haven Nursing Home for the compassion and loving care given to him during his stay.
