Sept. 11, 1918 – April 7, 2013

Ruth Holst, age 94, died Sunday, April 7, 2013 at the Parkview Manor Care Center, Reinbeck with her family by her side.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, at the Onslow Presbyterian Church, with interment in the Wyoming Cemetery.  Pastor Mike Campbell officiated at the services.  Friends called from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at Goettsch Funeral Home, Monticello.

Ruth Margaret Reid was born Sept. 11, 1918 in Dubuque, Iowa.  She was the daughter of Oseola and Mary Blanche Reid.  Ruth went to school in Osage from grades 1 thru 8 and then in Ackley for grades 9 and 10.  She graduated from St. Ansgar High School with the class of 1936.  She continued her education at the St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids where she graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1939.  She worked as a nurse at the Independence City Hospital and then did some in-home nursing in Stanwood.

Ruth married Marvin Holst (her former patient) on Sept. 14, 1940 at St. Paul Methodist Church, Cedar Rapids.  The couple farmed the Holst family farm near Center Junction, where they raised their three sons.   Ruth continued to live on the farm following Marvin’s death until 2008, when she moved to Westview Independent Living in Reinbeck.  She had been at Parkview Manor Care Center for the past month.

Ruth was a member of the Onslow Presbyterian Church, a member of the Christian Service Guild and the Altrurian Study Club for over 50 years.  She was a woman of deep faith.   She had been a Sunday School and Bible School teacher and was an enthusiastic supporter of the many 4-H activities in which her boys participated.  Ruth was also a volunteer at St. Luke’s Hospital.

Ruth loved being a grandmother and had a special bond with her grandchildren. She was a woman of positive virtue and strong character, always having the courage of her conviction and strength of her faith. Her keen mind all through her life was a marvel to all who knew her. She was deeply interested in those around her and in the affairs of her community and family. Ruth was a nurturer, accomplished nurse, homemaker and devoted friend.

She loved to cook and bake for family and friends; her welcome mat was always out. She was a humble servant of the Lord and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Surviving are four daughters-in-law: Kathy Holst, Reinbeck, Bonnie Holst Cummings and husband Bill Cummings, Center Junction, Lorrie Holst, Greensburg, Pa., Nancy Holst, Denver, Colo., and 10 grandchildren: Jason (Michelle) Holst, Beth (Pat) Hennes, Austin (Erin) Holst, Autumn (Travis) Craig, Kim (Brandon) Blankenship, Kelly (Puffer Jones) Holst, Dr. L.L. (Janir) Thorndike, Nicole (Rocky) Baker, Allison (Shawn) Scott, Lindsay Holst and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin, in 1994; three sons, Robert, John, Gary; and her brother, Harlen.

Memorial gifts in Ruth’s honor will benefit the Onslow Presbyterian Church, First Presbyterian Church of Reinbeck, and Cedar Valley Hospice. Gifts may be directed to the family.
