Monticello is seeing a favorable combination of its experienced players and its freshmen as the high school boys golf season progresses.

The Panthers were finally able to get a couple of meets in last week, and showed the kind of balance and depth that could make them strong this season.

The first one was a loss, however, as Monticello fell by two strokes to visiting East Buchanan April 12, losing 164 to 166.

“We knew they were going to be one of the top teams in the Tri-Rivers Conference, at least on paper,” Monticello coach Curt Tauke said. “We played pretty well. For some of the younger kids, it was their first meet ever, and their scores were very respectable.”

Tim Norton shot a 38 to be co-medalist with Jordan Schultz of East Buchanan. Three freshmen - Cody Menster, Jacob Bergman and Marcus Norton - all were part of the six-player varsity squad, and none of them scored higher than 46.

The Panthers traveled to Manchester April 12, and shot 165 to defeat both Springville (210) and Maquoketa Valley (214).

The meet was played in wet conditions with a temperature of 36 degrees.

“It was brutal,” Tauke said of the weather. It was windy and cold; there were snowflakes at the end of the meet.”

Despite that, the six Panther varsity players were separated by just four strokes. Marcus Norton was meet medalist with a 40, while Tim Norton and Michael Reuter were one stroke behind.

“We’ve had some good solid scores,” Tauke said. “Give us a little more time, and we can do some good things.”
