GIRLS GOLF

Three early-season meets proved that the Monticello girls golf team has much to look forward to this season.

“I did not think we would shoot such good scores at the beginning of the season, but I will take it,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “I was happy to see how many kids we have playing, and even though the weather hasn’t cooperated, it was nice to get some meets under our belts.”

The first of those was a home meet against East Buchanan April 8, which the Panthers won 187 to 229. Hannah Thompson was medalist with a 40.

On April 9, the Panthers played host to Central City, which did not have a complete team. Monticello improved by three strokes from the previous day, shooting a team score of 184, and Allison Ries was medalist with a 43.

Next, the Panthers endured cold, wet conditions in a home triangular meet April 12, and beat both Springville and Maquoketa Valley. Monticello shot 197, MV had 249 and Springville totaled 292.

Thompson was meet medalist for the second time this season, with a 486. Darby Kramer was two strokes behind at 48.
