GIRLS TRACK

By Pete Temple, Express Sports Editor

Last week was a week to celebrate for the Monticello girls track and field team, particularly for senior Kaylee Jones.

The Panther sprinter not only qualified individually for the Drake Relays in the 100-meter dash, but was voted as KCRG-TV Athlete of the Week.

“Kaylee Jones has been so dominant so far this year,” Monticello assistant coach Terri Dirks said. “She has won every 100-meter dash with ease.

“She is the type of teammate and person that everyone would want on their team. Her talent and passion speak for themselves on the track.”

Also qualifying for Drake is the 4×100-meter relay team that includes Taylor Guyer, Sonya McCormick, Rachel Gadient and Jones. The meet is scheduled for Thursday through Saturday, April 25-27 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

A pair of meets at Tipton occupied the Panthers recently. At the Tigerette Relays April 12, Monticello finished fifth out of 13 teams, with 48.5 points.

Relay teams provided some of the highlights, as the Panther 4×200 and 4×400 teams both won their races. Jones also was a winner in the 100.

“This night was cold and windy, but the girls did a great job of pushing through the conditions and competing against the field of good teams,” Dirks said.

The Panthers went back to Tipton April 16, and ended up third in a field of eight schools.

Monticello again had three wins. Rachel Gadient won the high jump with a season-best height of 4-foot-10. The 4×100 was victorious, as was Jones in the 100, with a season-best time of 12.72 seconds.

Other season bests were recorded by Abby Schmerbach, Ellen Schlarmann, Kally Blake, Taylor McDonough, Mandi Miles and McCormick.

“I was so impressed by the entire team at this meet,” Dirks said. “It was the best night weather-wise we have had all year, and the girls took advantage of it.

“The majority of the girls’ times went down, and everyone’s confidence is growing. Field events brought us 34 points, which is awesome.”

Schmerbach was second in the long jump with a distance of 15-3.5, and Brooke Holub finished second in the shot put at 34-5.
