BOYS TRACK

Monticello will be as well represented at this year’s Drake Relays as it ever has.

The Panther boys track and field team will enter 10 athletes and eight total entries in seven events in this year’s classic track and field meet, set for April 25-27 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Among the qualifiers: Cody Jamison in the high jump, Michael Melchert in the 3,200, Devonte Merrill and Isaac Holtz in the discus, J.J. Frawley in the 1,600, and the 4×400, 4×800 and 1,600 medley relays.

“It’s always good to get back down there for the experience,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “It’s good for them to get out in front of that many people and compete against the best in the state. It should be fun.”
It’s the first time Williams has ever sent two Drake qualifiers in one event (the discus). And for comparison’s sake, this year’s team is sending more to Drake than the state championship 2007 squad, which qualified six athletes in five events. Last year, Merrill was the only Panther to qualify.

Tipton co-ed

Almost overshadowed in the Drake announcement were outstanding performances by the Panthers in two meets last week, both of which were won easily by Monticello.

At the Tipton co-ed meet April 16, the Panthers totaled 180 points, nearly doubling the total of runner-up West Branch (95).

There, the Panthers pulled off victories in 10 events, and had multiple scorers in nine individual events.

“The weather cooperated for us to have our best meet of the year,” Monticello coach Greg Williams said. “Our team came ready to compete, and they did not disappoint.”

Three Panthers earned a spot in the Drake Relays with their performances at Tipton: Michael Melchert, winning the 3,200 in 9:33.95; J.J. Frawley, winning the 1,600 in 4:24.22; and Devonte Merrill, winning the discus with a distance of 157-foot-8.

Also, Garrett Rieniets’ high jump of 6-0 was his best of the season so far.

“Our guys did a great job. I am proud of all of them,” Williams said.

Fearing Relays

On Saturday, April 20, the Panthers were convincing winners again, outscoring runner-up Western Dubuque 172 to 139 to win the Fearing Relays.

The meet, originally scheduled April 2 in Anamosa, was moved to Cascade because Anamosa was hosting a youth track meet that day.

“As a team we are getting better each week,” Williams said. “I am very pleased with how the younger guys are competing.”

Field events were particularly dominant in this meet for the Panthers, as they went one-two in three of the four. Devonte Merrill ???? with his throw of 165-8, and Isaac Holtz was second. Monticello also took the top two spots in the high jump (Cody Jamison and Garrett Rieniets) and shot put (Daniel Pike and Holtz).

“Our field events have really been a key this year in scoring a lot of points for the team,” Williams said. “And Logan McQuillen continues to improve each time he runs the 400 low hurdles.”

Marion JV

Monticello sent a junior varsity squad to Marion for its annual JV meet April 15, and picked up wins in four events. Among those was Jordan Loes with a time of 5:03.62 in the 1,600.

“Jayson Blunt had a 10-foot improvement in the discus,” Williams noted. “The younger guys showed a lot of competitiveness in all our events. Our relays were very strong.”
