GIRLS TRACK

Monticello scored points in 13 events, and worked to position itself for the big meets ahead, during the Panthers’ home girls track and field meet Tuesday, April 30.

The Panthers wound up third in the nine-team field, missing second place by one point. Solon won the meet convincingly with 197 points, Anamosa scored 73 and Monticello totaled 72.

“We have been trying to position some relays and individual things over the past few meets, and I feel that they are really coming together,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said.

Mostly what came together were personal records. Among those achieving PRs were Rachel Gadient in the 100-meter dash, Becca Burmachl and Kaitlyn Jacobs in the 100 hurdles, Haley Stickfort in the long jump (by nearly two feet), and the first place 4×200 relay team of Kaylee Jones, Taylor Guyer, Sonya McCormick and Gadient.

“We also saw a great leadoff leg from Taylor McDonough in the JV 4x400relay that both coach (Terri) Dirks and I were pleasantly surprised with. It was probably her gutsiest run of her season.”

Jazmine Reynolds won the 800-meter dash, with teammate Kally Blake finishing third. The 4×400 relay was second.

Monticello also traveled to the very competitive Marion Invitational April 29, and totaled 18 points to finish in 10th place. Highlights included a victory by Ellen Schlarmann in the 1,500, with a time of 5:21.11; and a third place finish by Brooke Holub in the shot put, 36-3.5.

Conference meet

The cold, wet weather of late last week caused postponement of the Tri-Rivers Conference Meet May 2. It was scheduled to be held May 6 at Edgewood-Colesburg, after press time. Results will be printed in the May 15 Express.
