Hannah Thompson shot 41-41-82 to finish second overall, leading the Monticello girls golf team to the Tri-Rivers Conference championship at the conference tournament Monday, May 6 at Pin Oak Pub & Links in Manchester.
The Panthers won the meet by nine strokes over Cascade, 374 to 383. North-Linn was third with 396.
It was the third conference title for Monticello in the past six years, but the first since 2009. The Panthers finished second to Cascade the past three seasons.
“We played well enough, on a tough course,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “It was nice to win the conference title in our last year in the conference.
“I’m happy for the girls; they put a lot of effort into this. They deserve recognition for hanging in there.”
It was the fourth conference tournament for Thompson, a senior, and the first team championship.
“It’s awesome to finally get it done,” she said.
Freshman Allison Ries, who shot a 94 to take seventh place, also earned all-conference honors for finishing in the top 10.
“On the first nine I did really well. I had some bad shots on the back nine,” Ries said. “But overall, pretty decent.”
Next up for the Panthers is a May 10 meet against Anamosa at Fawn Creek. The Class 3A first round qualifying meet will be Monday, May 13 in State Center, Iowa.
Earlier, Monticello competed in the Lancer Invitational, hosted by North Scott in Davenport.
Dubuque Senior won the meet with a team score of 361. The Panthers were second with 379, 19 strokes ahead of third place DeWitt Central.
Thompson shot an 88, including 39 on the back nine, to finish third individually. Darby Kramer was fifth with a 93, and Ries took seventh place with a 95.
The medalist was Madi Davis of Senior, who won a playoff with teammate Molly Zimmerman after both shot 87, just one stroke ahead of Thompson.
