Monticello rode an 85 by Hannah Thompson and four scores in double digits to a victory in the Class 3A First Round Regional Girls Golf Tournament Monday, May 13 at Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center, Iowa.
The win advances Monticello to the Regional Final, to be held Monday, May 20 at Edgewater Golf Course in Oelwein.
The Panthers finished with a team score of 375, beating runner-up South Hardin, which had 391. Anamosa was third in the eight-team field with 403.
“I’m happy for the girls,” Monticello coach Joe Steen said. “They’ve put in a lot of work this year. It’s nice to see them make it to the next round. It’s a big opportunity for them.
Thompson, a senior, took second place individually with her score, which included a back nine total of 39. Thompson qualified individually for the regional final with that finish. The meet medalist was Paige Van Dyk of South Tama, with a 78.
“I putted extremely well on the back nine,” Thompson said. “The front nine was very challenging.”
Allison Ries came in with a 93, Darby Kramer shot a 98, Haley Moore had 99, while Tasia Welter and Faith Wenger both shot 103.
Thompson, a state tournament qualifier last year, is hoping she and the entire team can make it this year. The top two teams and top five individuals at the regional final will advance to State.
“I’m very excited,” she said. “I like our chances. If we can get four scores in under 100, we should be fine.”
The Panthers also competed in a regular season meet at Fawn Creek May 10 against Anamosa, and won 182 to 201. Ries was meet medalist with a 40, and Thompson shot 42.
