GIRLS TRACK

Sometimes, the wait is worth it.

Monticello came out of the Class 2A regional meet Thursday, May 9 in Monticello knowing it had qualified three entries to State.

The Panthers had to wait until Friday to compete in the discus event, because a series of rainstorms and one long delay left it too dark to conduct the event Thursday. In the other events, Monticello finished third or below, so the team had to wait until results came in from across the state to see which entries qualified.

“With a pretty good district, I was fairly certain that a few more things would go,” Monticello coach Darren Reade said.

Over the weekend, the Panthers learned that six more entries made it, giving them 10 total entries in nine events. On top of that, Monticello finished third as a team. Reade said both of those results represent the best finishes in the seven years he has been coaching girls track.

“Overall, the girls did awesome,” Reade said. “I told the girls that we had the possibility to send quite a few things to State.

“The girls battled through the rainstorm and delay and really had a great meet all around.”

Included were three first place finishes, from Kaylee Jones in the 100, Mandi Miles in the 400-meter hurdles, and Brooke Holub in the shot put.

On Friday, Sonya McCormick placed second in the discus. Monticello also qualified by time in the following: Rachel Gadient in the 100, Ellen Schlarmann in the 1,500, and the 4×100, 4×200, sprint medley and distance medley relays.

The state meet will be Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Tri-Rivers

Conference Meet

Monticello also had a strong performance in the Tri-Rivers Conference Meet, which was postponed from May 2 and held May 6 at Edgewood.

The Panthers finished fourth overall.

“We had some really inspiring performances at the conference meet,” Reade said. “Our field events went crazy, scoring more than a fourth of our overall points.”

Brooke Holub beat her personal best in the shot put by four inches, while Sonya McCormick and Becca Burmahl finished one-two in the discus.

“Not only did they supercede my expectations of their final placings, they also destroyed their personal bests,” the coach said. “Becca broke hers by six feet, and Sonya by almost 15.”

Kaylee Jones ran the best time of her high school career, giving her the top time in Class 2A so far this season. Mandi Miles broke her PR in the 400 hurdles by two seconds.
