The Maquoketa River flooded into Walnut Acres Campground late last week. Owners Chip and Kim Smith notified campers on Thursday afternoon, May 30, of possible flooding and had the campers relocate to higher ground. According to Jones County Emergency Management Coordinator Brenda Leonard, the river crested in Monticello around 5 a.m. on May 31, 4 inches below the 100-year flood plain. (Photos by Kim Brooks)
Mon Maq Dam looked quite different on Thursday, May 30, after over a week of heavy rains. Many local people came out to the dam on May 30 to see the damage as tree limbs, tree trunks, several boat docks and dozens of barrels filled with toxic chemicals lined the dam. The debris from upstream blocked the active flow of the Maquoketa River over the dam, causing water to spill over onto the side of the dam.
