JULY 3 OFF THE MARK COLUMN — MARK SPENSLEY, CO-PUBLISHER
If July’s weather stays this way like today (Monday), what a great July 4th weekend it could be. Monticello once again will have quite a bit going on this week.
The Monticello Fire Department will be rolling out another fantastic breakfast the morning of the fourth, starting at 6:30 a.m. in the air-conditioned Monticello Berndes center.
Shortly after, one of the greatest parades will kick off through the north side neighborhoods of our town. Be sure and get here early.
Then on Friday, July 5, the first annual Rayzor Ray Memorial Golf Outing will take place. The format will be a four-person best shot, a choice of tee off times of 11:00 a.m. or 1 p.m. A dinner, awards and prizes will follow the event.
Then, the big event of the weekend will be that evening. The Monticello Fire Department will once again be sponsoring a live concert and fireworks, along with the Monticello Chamber of Commerce.
Last year was our first crack at hosting this event. Hot weather might have kept our numbers down. For those that did turn out, the event was a blast.
This year we have a band from the Chicago area, The Breakfast Club, who look like a very energized and entertaining bunch. They will be strutting out high-energy songs from the ’80s. The best part is this year the event is FREE! Yes, once again, it is FREE!
There will be a beverage stand available, run by the Chamber, and the Monticello Cubs baseball team will be in charge of selling food for the event.
Immediately after the music stops, at dark, the sky will light up with what will surely be a breathtaking display of fireworks.
In addition to music, food and fireworks, there will be plenty of stuff for kids to do as well!
We sure hope for great weather and a large turnout this Friday! Did I mention it was FREE?
