Gene was born on May 4, 1926, in Scotch Grove, Iowa, the son of Howard and Alta (Glenn) Cook. He graduated from Anamosa High School with the Class of 1944. On Nov. 28, 1948, he married Betty Michel at the First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids. Together they farmed near Scotch Grove until retiring in 1991. The day after retiring from farming, he began working at the Jones County Landfill near their home. His last day at work was last Monday, July 8.
Gene was an avid fan of the Hawkeyes, Cubs, Bears and NASCAR. On his last night, he watched the Cubs shutout the Cardinals! He loved to play cards and go to the casinos. His passion and interests were always in farming.
He is survived by his children: Linda (Ted) Willliams of Mt. Vernon, Mike (Marita) Cook of Thompson, Carolyn (Bill) Lutz of Ames, Julie (Dennis) Weers of Anamosa, and Rick (Susan) Cook of Monticello; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren with another on the way; and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2008, three brothers: Merlin, Galen and Leo Cook.
We, Gene’s family, would like to thank the staff of Jones Regional Medical Center Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab Department, especially Kim and Theresa, for their years of special attention and care. We would also like to thank the Wayne Zion community for always remembering Dad.
