Jones County 4-H members cover many areas at State fair

Jones County 4-H members earned ribbons in a wide variety of categories during the recent Iowa State Fair.

Here, courtesy of Jones County Extension and Outreach, is a rundown on the award-winners.

Audience Appeal Earns 4-H’ers Awards at Iowa State Fair

Jones County 4-H’ers earned recognition as communicators at the Iowa State Fair.

4-H’ers compete in three categories of oral communication – educational presentations, working exhibits, extemporaneous speaking – and one category of visual communication. In educational presentations, the 4-H’ers teach their audience about a topic they selected and researched. In working exhibits, the 4-H’ers invite passers-by to try a skill they demonstrate. In extemporaneous speaking, the 4-H’ers prepare a speech in 30 minutes and deliver it to an audience. In poster communication, the 4-H’er conveys a message visually.

4-H’ers Perform at Share-the-Fun

Jones County 4-H’ers performed during the Share-the-Fun event in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the 2013 Iowa State Fair. Share-the-fun participants perform vocal or instrumental music, dance, humorous skits, monologues and specialty acts.

About 100 youth perform each day of the fair, according to Mitchell Hoyer, program coordinator for Iowa State University Extension 4-H Youth Development. “Our judges give skill-building pointers in several areas including presence, performance techniques and interpretation.”

4-H’ers Recognized for Herdsmanship at Iowa State Fair

Beef exhibitors from Jones County earned a third place herdsmanship award at the Iowa State Fair.

Jones County 4-H’ers Win Showmanship at Iowa State Fair

Tyler Frasher from Jones County received purple ribbon for his outstanding ability in the swine show ring. Samuel Dolan, Jessica Frasher, Madelyn Morningstar and Luke Rogers were honored with blue ribbons for showmanship in the swine show.

Ryan Barner, Gavin Cooper, Ashley Iehl, Austin Timm, Gavin Timm and Zach Timm from Jones County received blue ribbons for showmanship in the swine show.

“Most shows evaluate the animals, but the showmanship award reflects the 4-H member’s ability to prepare and exhibit the animal in the show ring,” said Monica Gray, Jones County Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Youth Program Coordinator.

4-H Clothing and Fashion, Sewing and Needle Arts Exhibits Judged at the Iowa State Fair

Jones County 4-H’ers designed some of the 360 clothing and fashion, sewing and needle arts entries selected for judging in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.

4-H Consumer Management and Child Development Projects Judged at the Iowa State Fair

Jones County 4-H’ers earned awards for their child development and consumer sciences entries judged in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.

4-H Citizenship Projects Judged at the Iowa State Fair

Jones County 4-H’ers developed some of the more than 125 citizenship entries judged in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.

4-H’ers can design their own citizenship project and present the results. Examples of projects include programs to encourage youth to register to vote and demonstrate the proper way to dispose of an American flag.

Jones County’s exhibitor was Jenna Walleser, Blue.

4-H Ag and Natural Resources Exhibitors Earn Awards at Iowa State Fair

Jones County 4-H’ers contributed to more than 300 agriculture and natural resources entries judged in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.

This division includes eight classes, including Animal and Veterinary Science; Crop Production; Environment and Sustainability; Horticulture; Outdoor Adventures; and Safety and Education in Shooting Sports. Over 5,000 members annually enroll in horticulture (the largest class).

Creative Arts Earns 4-H’ers Awards at the Iowa State Fair

Jones County 4-H’ers created some of nearly 1,000 creative arts entries judged in the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair.

Iowa has more than 14,000 4-H’ers enrolled in photography, the highest in the 50 states, according to Mitchell Hoyer, program specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach 4-H Youth Development and 4-H Exhibits Building Superintendent.

4-H’ers can further their studies in a project area that doesn’t fit into traditional categories. By creating their own project, they are responsible for finding their own information.
