If ever there were a case of picking up where one left off, the two-time defending state champion Monticello boys cross country team did just that Sept. 5 in Iowa City.

The Panthers totaled just 20 points in winning the prestigious Bob Brown Invitational by 55 Sept. 5. Monticello took the top three spots, with Michael Melchert, Nick Meyers and Ben Ahlrichs, respectively. The Panthers also had four of the top six and six of the first nine.

Monticello’s top-five team time of 84 minutes, 38 seconds better than the 84:50 posted by last year’s state champions.

“It means we’re in the ballpark of where we want to be in comparison with last year’s team.”

The sophomores – Matt Manternach, Derek Manternach, Jordan Loes and Zach Holmes – all had top-20 finishes.

“They showed they were ready to go up to the next level,” Sauser said.

The Panthers girls also had a strong meet, finishing fourth. They were led by Ellen Schlarmann, who was 12th overall. Schlarmann ran about two minutes faster than she did on the same course last year.

“Ellen had an excellent race,” Sauser said. “It was a good first race for the girls. It was kind of a platform for our team to grow from. We’re heading in the right direction.”

Monticello was also second in the boys JV race and fifth in the girls JV event.

All but two of the Panthers had their best times of the season so far. Three of them Рthe Manternach twins and JV runner Treyton Hanssen - had lifetime personal records.

Ames meet

Because the Panthers were unable to compete in the cancelled Cedar Rapids Prairie meet, they have entered a new meet in order to get more large-school competition.

Monticello will send its varsity teams to the Roosevelt Heartland Classic Sept. 21 at the Iowa State University Cross Country Course in Ames. The girls varsity will compete at 11 a.m., and the boys varsity will run at 11:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, the JV teams will run in the Cascade Invitational Sept. 20 in Fillmore.
