Monticello’s cross country teams got their annual opportunity to run on the grounds at Western Dubuque High School Oct. 3, and the results were similar to what the Panthers have achieved all season.

The Panther boys were easy winners, placing four runners in the top 10 and all seven in the top 25, on the way to a 51-point victory over runner-up Decorah. It was the only division of the four (boys and girls, JV and varsity) in which Decorah did not claim the championship.

Michael Melchert slipped under the 16:00 to win in 15:58, 51 seconds ahead of runner-up Andrew Meyer of Bellevue. Ben Ahlrichs ran third, Matt Manternach was sixth, Jordan Loes was eighth and Derek Manternach finished 13th.

“The boys were running very confidently as we are entering the final preparation race before the stretch run,” Monticello coach Dan Sauser said.

“Michael ran another fabulous race and easily led the pack. I was really pleased with how both Matt and Derek Manternach stepped up when we were down one of our top runners (Nick Meyers, recovering from a strained muscle in his lower leg).

“I’ve continued to be impressed with all the underclassmen racing at both the varsity and junior varsity levels. They continue to make very good improvements, and we are hoping to get their best seasonal performances in the next couple of races.”

Monticello’s girls finished sixth with 139 points, four points behind fifth place Western Dubuque. Ellen Schlarmann was ninth overall in 16:40, followed by Jazmine Reynolds in 17th place, Natasha Eby in 21st and Mandi Miles in 31st.

“The girls varsity looked very strong up front,” Sauser said. “Ellen led us with another great performance in a race that was loaded with top talent. Her ninth place finish was very impressive in this race.

“We are looking to shore up our 5-7 runners. We’ve had some injuries to a couple of the runners on the varsity team, and we’ll have to address this to make sure we are ready to go by the state qualifying meet. We have the runners up front, but as the saying goes, ‘You are only as good as your fifth runner.’ ”

Monticello’s boys were fourth and girls were fifth in the junior varsity races. Dalton Husmann led the boys, placing fourth in 18:52. McKenna Kremer was the first Panther girl to finish, 19th in 19:23.
