Five members of the state champion Monticello High School cross country team traveled to Ankeny, Iowa on Saturday, Nov. 9 to compete in the Iowa Association of Track Coaches (IATC) Senior All-Star cross country event.
High school seniors competed in the Senior All-Star Men’s 5-K, for which teams were formed by region.
Michael Melchert and Ben Ahlrichs competed as part of the Northeast team, with Melchert winning the individual title in a time of 16 minutes, 11 seconds; and Ahlrichs finishing fifth in 16:48.
The Northeast team totaled 35 points to win the team title, followed by the Northwest with 40, Southeast with 59 and Southwest with 111.
An open 5K was held for runners of all ages. Monticello’s Jordan Loes finished third overall in 17:25, and Matt Manternach was fifth in 17:41. They were second and third, respectively, in the male 14-16 age group. Derek Manternach was also in the top 10 out of the 56 runners, finishing seventh overall in 18:26.
