There is a new group of Friends of the Ross & Elizabeth Baty Public Library here in Monticello. In the fall of 2012, several library supporters got together and decided to reactivate the Friends of the Library, which became inactive in 2011. (The Friends was originally established in 1991.) The group is now preparing to kick off its 2014 membership drive, which is a fundraiser for the library.

The Friends of the Library, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible. The membership cost for an individual is just $10 for the year. It’s good through Dec. 31, 2014.

The membership drive is currently underway and runs through Jan. 31, 2014. Anyone who signs up now will be entered into a drawing for a free e-reader! The winner will be announced on Saturday, Feb. 1.

One of the missions of the Friends of the Library is to foster public support for the library, which then serves the needs of the Monticello community. A library is a free public service, providing free books, magazines, newspapers, Internet, computer access and more to those who wish to utilize the library.

The Friends of the Library also helps promote functions and resources offered at the library. They support programming and events held at the library for the community that are compatible with the library’s policies and objectives.

Through the years, the Friends have used funds to purchase a metal book cart for re-shelving books, purchase a table for the children’s play area and purchase a booth for the teen area. They’ve financially supported the Summer Reading Program by helping to bring in guest speakers. They have also recently helped pay for the incentives for the Winter Reading Program. At many events at the library, the Friends provided refreshments for the public. They continue to show appreciation to the library director and staff.

A five-person board manages the Friends group, taking on the roles of president, vice president, secretary, treasurer and one at-large member. They hold several business meetings throughout the year; the public is always welcome to attend and offer ideas.

You can help support the Friends of the Library by purchasing a $10 annual membership or donating money in honor or memory of a loved one.

“When you become a Friend of the Ross & Elizabeth Baty Public Library, you’ll have the year-round satisfaction of knowing that your willingness to be a Friend enhances library services for the entire community.”

The Friends is offering both individual and business memberships. Businesses can be a 2014 sponsor at various levels: Business Membership at $25, Bronze Level at $50-$99, Silver Level at $100-$199, Gold Level at $200-$299, and Platinum Level at $300 or more. Businesses can also give a product donation, if they prefer, to go toward the Summer Reading Program.

Sign up now through Jan. 31 to be eligible for the prize drawing. Checks can be made payable to the Friends of the Library and mailed to Friends of the Monticello Public Library, Inc., 205 E. Grand St., Monticello, IA 52310.
