Six finalists, three champions, and lots of team points gave the Monticello High School wrestling team a strong tournament performance for the second week in a row.

The Panthers wound up second in the seven-team Zimmerman Invitational Saturday, Dec. 14 in Maquoketa. Monticello’s 190 points were second to Dubuque Hempstead (242) and ahead of third place Midland (111).

Dalton Husmann (120 pounds) and Daniel Pike (285) were champions for the second Saturday in a row, and were joined by Jordan Barker, who won the title at 138 pounds.

Also reaching the finals were runners-up Ben Ahlrichs (126), Scottlon Eckhardt (145) and Zach Timm (220).

Three other Panthers took third place, including Olivia Sunlin at 106, who scored her first two varsity victories, including a pin in the third place match. Trent Aitchison at 152 and Luke Knipper at 182 were third as well.

Two days earlier, Monticello split a pair of matches at the Cascade double dual, losing a hard-fought match against Mid-Prairie by a score of 39-33, and beating Cascade 54-30.

The Panthers jumped to a 24-0 lead over Mid-Prairie, helped by pins from Husmann and Ahlrichs, but Mid-Prairie battled back to win four straight matches, as well as the final two, and came away with the win.

Against Cascade, Monticello had pins from Peyton Paddock, Zach Timm and Husmann, and took advantage of five forfeits.

Monticello will be on the road again this week, wrestling a quadrangular meet at Iowa City Regina Dec. 19 and a tournament at Starmont on Dec. 21 before heading into the holiday break.
