Monticello rolled to a 28-11 halftime lead, and kept Midland from closing the gap in the second half, on the way to a 52-38 boys basketball victory Saturday, Dec. 21 in Monticello.

The game, originally scheduled for that evening, was moved to the afternoon because of an impending winter storm. Weather also was a factor a day earlier, when a scheduled home game against West Liberty was postponed.

In the battle between Jones County rivals, Matt Manternach had a big game for Monticello, leading the team in scoring with 12 points, in rebounds with nine, and in assists with five. Manternach shot 4-for-9 from the field, including 4-for-8 from three-point range.

“Matt has really adjusted to the speed of the varsity game,” Monticello coach Tim Lambert said. “He’s a nice versatile, athletic player.”

Cody Jamison shot 6-for-10 from the field and finished with 12 points as well. Derek Manternach pulled down eight rebounds. Jarrett Easton made four steals.

The Panthers (3-2, 4-3) outscored the Eagles in all four quarters, but only 15-14 in the third period.

“We need to play defense like it’s 0-0 all the time,” Lambert said. “We did not do that in the third quarter. We traded baskets, and that’s not good enough.”

It was the final game before the holiday break for the Panthers. They will return to action with three straight road games, Jan. 3 at North Cedar, Jan. 4 at Tipton and Jan. 7 at Cascade.

The next home game is scheduled for Jan. 10 against Bellevue.
