Six finalists and two champions led the Monticello High School wrestling team to a fourth place finish in the 12-team Doug Guilford Tournament, hosted by Starmont Dec. 21 in Arlington.
Dubuque Wahlert won the event with 199 points, followed by Oelwein with 176, East Buchanan with 148.5 and Monticello with 133.
“I thought we could have finished in the top two, but we needed more consolation victories and placement points,” Luensman said. “This was a fun tournament because we got to see new teams that we don’t normally get to see, and the competition was very good.”
Dalton Husmann won the 120-pound division with a 4-0 decision over Colton Dietrick of Jesup in the finals. Also winning was Daniel Pike, at 285, who pinned Gatlin Keener of MFL MarMac in 1:53.
Finishing second for the Panthers were Anthony Kinley at 112, Ben Ahlrichs at 126, Jordan Barker at 138 and Zach Timm at 220.
“Six wrestlers in the finals was a good accomplishment, but we need to win more of the finals matches,” Luensman said. “Dalton Husmann won his title beating the seventh-ranked kid from Jesup. Daniel Pike beat a very quality heavyweight from MFL MarMac. They both continue to take control of their matches.
“Zach Timm continues to improve every tournament. Lukas Wilson battled throughout the day to finish fifth.”
The tournament was the final event for the Panthers prior to the holiday break. They are scheduled to return to action Jan. 9 in a double dual meet hosted by North Cedar and held at its middle school. Iowa City Regina is the third team there.
“We don’t have a lot of depth, but the kids we have are improving,” the coach said. “I’m excited to see how this team responds to the second part of the season.”
