   Is there hope for Ely’s Stone Bridge?

   About 50 people attended a public meeting May 13 at the VFW Hall in Monticello to discuss that very topic.

   While the overall outlook presented was not necessarily an optimistic one, many of those in attendance expressed an interest in finding ways to fund the preservation of the 132-year-old structure, just northwest of Monticello.

Bord to vote on return of DECAT/CPPC contracts

   The Jones County Board of Supervisors plans to make a decision on whether the county should once again hold the contracts of the Decategorization initiative (DECAT) and the Community Partnership for Protecting Children (CPPC) initiative.

   In fiscal year 2025, these contracts were held by Linn County to support the work in Jones County. But Linn County recently voted not to renew the Jones County portion of its contract.

Teacher closes the book; Isaac steps away from 33-year teaching career

   Steph Isaac says there have been many changes in her 33 years as a schoolteacher.

   In her eyes, students are not among them.

   “I would say, I think kids are the same,” Isaac said in a May 16 interview. “I just think that the world has changed. The world is so much more fast-paced with technology and social media.

   “I just think the world is different. I don’t think kids are different.”

Arduser brings his love of athletics to Sports Editor job

   Kegan Arduser’s love of sports should serve him well as he begins work as the new Sports Editor of the Monticello Express.

   Arduser, who grew up in Monticello, started work with the Express on May 13, taking over for longtime Sports Editor Pete Temple, who is retiring from the Express in June.

   The Express has been owned by Sycamore Media Corp. since May 2024.

‘Cook the Books’

library event

is scheduled

“Cook the Books; My Mini and Me”, will be held Saturday, May 31, 10 a.m. at the Ross & Elizabeth Public Library in Monticello.

The event is an opportunity for moms and dads to bring their little ones to the library for a fun hour of cooking for all of you. Spaghetti, zucchini meatballs and bread twists will be prepared by participants.

Registration is required; space is limited. For safety purposes, the child-to-adult ratio may not be more than 2:1.

   Visiting new places is not only a way to relax and unwind, but it’s a way to see what other communities do to make themselves a great place to visit.

   That is the theme of the project awarded $7,000 from the Monticello Give to Grow endowment fund.
