Property valuations up as Supervisors begin budget talks

Early projections say Jones County officials will have just over $270,000 in additional revenues for its upcoming budget if tax rates remain nearly the same. 

The increase is thanks in part to a 3.37% growth in the county’s taxable property values. However, due to state law that requires counties to reduce their increase percentage if growth eclipses 3%, the county will only be allowed to capture 2.4% of that increase through property taxes.

Council discusses code enforcement and nuisance issues

Talk on code enforcement and property nuisance issues filled the Monticello City Council regular meeting on Dec. 15, as City Attorney Doug Herman was in attendance to provide options to deal with problem properties, 

     Herman explained Chapter 657A of the Iowa Code, which provides for a legal process by which the City can obtain title to properties that fit the definition of “Abandoned,” which includes vacancy, deteriorating structure condition, the presence of pests, accumulation of debris, uncut vegetation, delinquent taxes and shut off utilities.

County’s workers’ comp. plan cost spiking

Jones County’s workers’ compensation policy premiums are expected to rise again this year, and officials are working through ways to limit the increase. 

“We are trending in the wrong direction,” said Staci Griffin with Iowa Municipalities Workers’ Compensation Association (IMWCA), a nonprofit risk-sharing pool that supplies workers’ compensation programs with governmental bodies. 

Monticello church hosting A.I. presentation

A local presenter will share information about artificial intelligence and its uses in agriculture and beyond.

“Emerging Artificial Intelligence Trends and Implications for Agriculture,” will take place at 10 a.m. Jan.12 at United Church of Monticello, 123 N. Chestnut St. 

An event announcement states Dave Dusanek, founder of Monticello business DigiFarm, will lead the session. 

Gardening webinar begins Jan. 8

The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Master Gardener program is hosting an upcoming webinar series aimed at inspiring and educating gardeners. 

The Home Gardening Webinar Series will begin on Jan. 8 and end in March. Sessions will take place every Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m., concluding on March 12.

Jones County hosting manure applicator certification training

Jones County is one of 72 sites in Iowa hosting a free commercial manure applicator certification training on January 8. 

The training conducted by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. 

There is no fee for the workshop. Officials in Jones County say they need registrations by Jan. 5. No walk-ins are allowed. Those interested can register by calling the Jones County Extension office at (319) 465-3224.
