Shop with a Cop a 'true community effort'

The Jones County Family Council is preparing for the 9th Annual Shop with a Cop event.

On Dec. 8 and Dec 15, middle school students throughout Jones County will have the opportunity to scour the aisles of WalMart in Anamosa to shop for the holidays alongside a friendly law enforcement officer. The children will be shopping for gifts for their immediate family members and loved ones. The goal is to involve 60 kids this year.

Some last-minute Thanksgiving
meals available

While the deadline to sign up to receive a free meal from this year’s community Thanksgiving dinner in Monticello has passed, organizers say a small amount of meals should still be available on Thanksgiving day.

Those who didn’t sign up but would like a meal can leave a message at (319) 465-3219 and then go to the Berndes Center around noon on Thanksgiving day to grab a plate, according to organizer Bruce Feuling.

Lawmakers agree water quality is an issue in Iowa

Republican and Democratic legislators agreed last week that water quality is a pressing issue in the state along with property taxes and public health – all of which will be necessary to balance as the Legislature returns in January.

Water quality, cancer and conservation efforts in Iowa were a key topic on day two of the Iowa Nature Summit at Drake University as a panel of Iowa lawmakers discussed potential 2026 policies.
