The House passed a bill Feb. 25 to create and implement a statewide, 30-year resilience plan to protect state life, property and other assets in the event of a flood or other water-related disaster.

Rep. John Wills, R-Spirit Lake, said the legislation was a “visionary bill” that “redefines” how the state protects itself from “floods, droughts and shifting water supplies.”

“This bill is something that should have been done 30 years ago, but it wasn’t,” Wills said. “The next best time to do it is today.”

House agriculture committee advances right to repair bill

The House Agriculture Committee advanced a bill Thursday aimed at ensuring Iowa farmers can make their own repairs on agricultural equipment.

House Study Bill 751 would require agricultural equipment manufacturers to make documentation, parts, software, firmware and tools available at “fair and reasonable terms and costs” to independent repair facilities and equipment owners.

The bill was introduced by the committee chair, Rep. Derek Wulf, R-Hudson, who said the farm economy needs more “problem solvers.”

State report lists more than 700 impaired waters in Iowa

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources released a draft version of its 2026 biennial integrated report Tuesday, which listed more than 700 segments of rivers, lakes or wetlands in the state as impaired.

The impaired list looks at retroactive data and determines if a water segment meets, or fails to meet, designated criteria for uses like fishing, recreation or drinking water. Once a segment is listed as impaired, it triggers a restoration process under the federal Clean Water Act.

How will Trump's beef deal with Argentina affect Iowa ranchers?

Iowa ranchers are concerned about the domestic impact of a recent trade deal that would allow the U.S. to import an additional 80,000 metric tons of lean beef trimmings from Argentina. 

   President Donald Trump issued a proclamation to temporarily increase the U.S. tariff-rate quota for Argentinian beef, with a goal of improving the affordability of ground beef for consumers.
