Soil Health workshop is set

     The Soil Health Partnership and local sponsors are hosting a Soil Health Workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 14 from 9:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center on the Jones County Fairgrounds, 800 N Maple Street in Monticello.

     Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey encourages Iowans to consider joining a local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program that will give them access to fresh, locally grown produce throughout the growing season.

Century, Heritage Farm applications encouraged

     Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey is encouraging eligible farm owners to apply for the 2017 Century and Heritage Farm Program. The program is sponsored by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and recognizes families that have owned their farm for 100 years in the case of Century Farms and 150 years for Heritage Farms.

Double duty: Heins stay active in ag, on and off the farm

     Matt and Justin Hein didn’t invent the “like father, like son” cliché.

     But they are certainly living it.

     Both grew up developing a passion for farming and hard work in the outdoors. They farm together, operating the Hein Richland Farm northeast of Monticello.

     Now, both have a second job, also related to farming. And in both cases, it’s a matter of flexibility.

     The father, Matt, has worked for three years with Dale Hosch at Hosch Grain-Tec, while continuing to farm.

Recker excels in Hay & Grain Show in just second year

     Marissa Recker of Monticello is only a sophomore, but she is certainly risen to the ranks of a leader within the Monticello High School FFA Chapter.

     In her second year in FFA, Recker competed for a second time in the FFA Hay & Grain Show. As a first-year competitor, she remained low-key and only entered three out of a total of 20 classes. This year, however, she had entries in 10 different classes, the most one can take part in. And, Recker came away a first-place finisher out of 25 Monticello FFA participants.

Selling to serve; Cruise takes responsibility for producers' success

     Being an independent sales representative for a seed company is more than just taking orders and making deliveries.

     Jeff Cruise of Monticello, who has been selling Pioneer seed for 13 years, is among those who provides whatever products and services that will best benefit the customer.

     “What I like about it is helping farmers meet their goals,” Cruise said. “It’s obviously a challenge every year when you are in production ag, and I take responsibility for it like it’s my own. When things go well, it’s a satisfying situation.”

Iowa Corn Future of Ag scholarships are offered

     The Iowa Corn Growers Association (ICGA) and the Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) are again offering the Iowa Corn Future of Agriculture scholarships to aid in the development of future talent for the Iowa agriculture industry.

     This year, Iowa Corn will award sixteen (16) $500 one-year scholarships to deserving, qualified students enrolled at an accredited U.S. two-year or four-year junior college, college or university, or graduate school, in a program of study that will equip them in contributing to Iowa’s agriculture industry.

'Nice Guy' launches corn videos

     The Iowa Corn Promotion Board (ICPB) has teamed up with the Iowa Nice Guy, Scott Siepker, to launch a series of short engaging videos informing consumers about several important subjects related to the state’s top crop...you guessed it, corn!
