Webinar features dairy version of 'Millionaire'

   Dairy specialists with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host webinars on Sept. 19 and Sept. 26, entertaining and educating with a dairy version of “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?”

     Both webinars will begin at noon at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center in Monticello, and will include information on how to analyze a dairy for profits and the profitability of various dairy systems. The Sept. 19 webinar will focus on conventional and hybrid dairy systems while the Sept. 26 webinar will discuss organic and organic “grass-fed” dairy systems.

FFA chapter is among State Fair winners

     Monticello’s FFA Chapter, Sydney Hansen and Marissa Recker were among the award-winners during various shows at the Iowa State Fair.

IFAA Sale of Champions sets records

     With a final swing of the gavel, the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) raised $352,600 for the 16 exhibitors of 4-H and FFA Grand and Reserve Champion livestock in the Sale of Champions Saturday at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.

     Three champion records were broken during the 2017 Sale.

Prairie Hill

     The regular meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was held at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center on Aug. 21, 2017.

     The meeting was called to order by Caleb Hogan at 7:05 p.m. The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Lindsey Adams. Roll call was “Favorite ice cream” and was answered by 27 members. Twelve visitors were present.

Local guernsey farms are among winners

     Sandy Hill Guernseys of Scotch Grove, Ka Kath Guernseys of Monticello, and Monticello’s Malcolm Clark, and Kira Steiner were among winners in early shows during the Iowa State Fair.

     Tyler Frasher of Anamosa showed a Reserve Champion Purebred Breeding Gilt during the FFA Parade of Champions Aug. 12 at the fair.

Finding mismatches in land use

     Conservation is ensuring the greatest good for the greatest number of people. This idea is credited to American forester Gifford Pinchot, but many have arrived at the same conclusion. Conservation is thus, a resource allocation challenge and among our many resources, land is the most finite.

Instructor training is offered for 4-H shooting sports

     The Iowa 4-H Youth Development program will host an instructor’s training event on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16 at the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Fayette County office in Fayette.

     Individuals interested in volunteering to work with young people to develop shooting and safety skills should contact their local ISU Extension and Outreach county office to begin the process of becoming a 4-H Safety and Education in Shooting Sports instructor.

Governor's Charity Steer Show raises more than $274,000

     Records were broken at the 35th annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show, which raised over $274,000 for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa.

     This year’s event featured the highest selling auction, including breaking the cumulative $3 million mark. The money raised benefits the Ronald McDonald Houses of Des Moines, Iowa City, and Sioux City. All of the houses are located near hospitals and provide a “home away from home” for families of seriously ill children.
