Booth ribbons are presented for GJCF

     Booth judging results for 4-H and FFA booths at the Great Jones County Fair have been announced.

     Club and chapters display their members’ FAST exhibits in the Expo Hall at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center. These booths are evaluated by volunteers.

     Criteria include condition, content, general impression, educational value, originality and neatness.

     Ribbon awards presented to 4-H clubs and FFA chapters for their booths follow.

     Purple ribbons: Fairview Thunderbolts, Olin 4-H Club, Richland R&R.

Farm Bill listening sessions are slated

     As Congress begins to set the direction of farm policy that will impact farmers, rural residents, and consumers, the Iowa Farmers Union will be holding Farm Bill Listening Sessions at three locations in Iowa. The general public is invited to voice opinions to help set the agenda for rural America and the 2018 Farm Bill.

     Sessions will be held according to the following schedule:

     Decorah – Wednesday, Aug. 23, 1 p.m., Decorah Public Library, 202 Winnebago St.

     Washington – Thursday, Aug. 24, 10 a.m., Washington Public Library, 115 W. Washington St.

Gadient running for Iowa Dairy Princess

     Thirteen young women involved with the Iowa dairy community will compete to win the title of 64th Iowa State Dairy Princess, Wednesday, Aug. 9 (today) at 8 p.m. at the Multi-Media Center of the Cattle Barn at the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines.

     The princess and her alternate are charged with helping consumers learn more about dairy products and the farm families who tend the farms and cows that provide them.

     Among the contestants is Jones County Dairy Princess Grace Gadient, 18, daughter of Bill and Melissa Gadient of Anamosa.

Sweepstakes award winners are announced

     Several Jones County 4-H exhibitors were Sweepstakes Award winners during the Great Jones County Fair.

     Exhibitors compete in several categories, and the Sweepstakes winner is the overall champion for that particular category.

ISU Extension hosting farmland leasing workshop

     Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Jones County is hosting a farmland leasing meeting on Monday, Aug. 14 at 6 p.m. at the Youth Development Center in Monticello. The annual meeting is offered to address questions that landowners, tenants, or other interested individuals have about leasing farmland.

     Core components of the program will include land values and cash rent trends, cost of production, methods for determining a rental rate, legal updates regarding leases and communication between tenants or landlords. Additional topics vary by location.

Horticulture winners listed

     The following 4-H/FFA Horticulture results from the Great Jones County Fair are being published again due to an inconsistency. The Express regrets the error.

     Ribbon winners have been announced for the Great Jones County Fair Horticulture Show.

     Holly Beringer of Cascade received Outstanding ratings for three of her projects. Sierra Lief of Wyoming, Wes Meyer of Anamosa, and Koree Miller of Anamosa each received one.

Ribbon results follow:

     Brayden Balichek, Oxford Junction, 1 blue.

GJCS FAST State Fair results

     The following 4-H/FFA F.A.S.T. results from the Great Jones County Fair are being published again due to an inconsistency. The Express regrets the error.

     Members of the 4-H and FFA clubs in Jones County had projects that qualified for the Iowa State Fair. Dozens of entries were awarded ribbons in Families, Arts, Science, and Technology (F.A.S.T.) categories during judging at the 2017 GJCF.

     A club-by-club listing of awards and ribbons follows. SF indicates State Fair qualifiers. OJ is Outstanding Junior.

Field day Friday to cover manure distribution, more

     Iowa State University Extension is holding a manure field day at Eldon C. Stutsman Inc. on Aug. 4 to help manure applicators better understand manure distribution, calibration and the value of manure.

     A flowmeter calibration check is important to achieve accurate application rates in the field. Understanding the value of manure can help producers to use nutrients appropriately, leading to better manure management for their livestock operations.
