ISA to join Reynolds on China trip

     Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) representatives will accompany Gov. Kim Reynolds and more than 20 agricultural leaders for a historic trade mission to China July 19-28 to boost demand for Iowa-grown grains, meat, milk and eggs.

     The delegation representing Iowa’s soybean, corn, beef, turkey, dairy, poultry and pork industries will be greeted in the country of nearly 1.4 billion by Terry Branstad, Iowa’s former governor and new U.S. trade ambassador to China.

Oxford Livewires

     The Oxford Livewires 4-H Club met on June 4, 2017 at Wapsi Park in Oxford Junction. Everyone enjoyed a potluck meal beginning at noon.

     After the potluck, members traveled to each other’s homes to see the animal projects everyone is working on. Club members who showed and discussed their animal projects are Andrea Feuss, Payton Feuss, Emma Vacek, Reece Vacek, Logan Bicknese, Alexis Jellison, Ty Jensen and Payton Lasack.

     The afternoon ended at the Lasack farm enjoying ice cream bars provided by Payton Feuss.

Naig to speak at Farm Bureau annual meeting

     Mike Naig, Deputy Secretary of Agriculture for the State of Iowa, will be the featured speaker at the Jones County Farm Bureau Annual Meeting on June 13. The meeting will be held at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center, Monticello, beginning with a meal at 5 p.m. and the meeting at 7 p.m. Jones County Farm Bureau members and their families are welcome to attend.

Fifth annual Brunscheen Memorial Cattle Show is held

     Tucker Jackson of Waukon and Carley Kintzle of Epworth showed the Breeding Heifer and Market Animal champions, respectively, in the fifth annual Gene Brunscheen Memorial Cattle Show Saturday, June 3 at the Great Jones County Fairgrounds.

     The event drew 16 entries in the Breeding Heifer class, and 14 in the Market Animal class.

Pretty in pink: N&N Trailer Sales makes girl's wish come true

     It’s not something you see every day. In fact, in 33 years of manufacturing trailers, N&N Trailer Sales of Monticello had never built one like this.

     A pink horse trailer.

     Kaylee Goddard, a 15-year-old horse lover from Muscatine, wanted to do something special to honor her grandmother, Debbie Goddard, a breast cancer survivor who has twice battled the disease.

     The Goddard family wanted a new horse trailer, so Kaylee and her father Jason decided to ask N&N if it could be painted pink to promote breast cancer awareness.

Class looks at new way to grow food

     “No Soil Required – The Future of Growing our Food” was the name of a class held Wednesday, May 17 at the Citizen State Bank Youth Development Center in Monticello.

     Youngsters, both members and non-members of 4-H, got a firsthand look at a cutting edge way to grow food and other plants – without soil.

     They got the chance to explore space agriculture, and build their own hydroponic garden buckets.

Cattlemen honor businesses

     Two Jones County businesses were honored recently by the Jones County Cattlemen as the organization celebrates May beef month.

     Each year, the Jones County Cattlemen nominate a “Friend of Industry.” This is a business or individual that has supported the cattlemen throughout the years. The  2017 winner is Coons Corner Grocery in Oxford Junction.

     Coons Corner supports the Cattlemen by providing an excellent selection of the finest beef products in the county.  The Jones County Cattlemen are proud to work with Coons Corner to help promote beef 2017 and beyond.

Master Gardener webcasts are set

     The Iowa Master Gardener program with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach will host three Growing Season webcasts this summer. Master Gardeners will gain educational hours while learning about urban tree selection, gardening with youth and landscaping for wildlife.

     The two-hour webcasts will be shown at ISU Extension and Outreach County offices. Contact a county office for dates and times. The webcasts are free of charge and open to anyone who may be interested.

PQA Plus, TQA sessions scheduled

     The Iowa Pork Producers Association is partnering with the Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach to offer free Pork Quality Assurance Plus (PQA Plus) and Transport Quality Assurance (TQA) programs for Iowa pig farmers.

     The sessions closest to Monticello Aug. 8 at Delaware County Extension and Outreach in Manchester, and Aug. 8 at Johnson County Extension and Outreach in Iowa City.
