Poll: Farmers increase NRS practices

     The 2016 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll examined trends in farming practices and strategies since 2013, the year that the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy (NRS) was started. The Farm Poll survey listed a number of nutrient loss reduction practices as well as some practices that are not recommended, and asked farmers if they had changed their use of the practices since 2013.

Oxford Happy Hustlers

April meeting

     The regular meeting of the Oxford Happy Hustlers was held April 2, 2017 at 5 p.m. in Onslow at the Bean Farm. Four members and five guests were present. All members brought a dessert or snack to share.

Producers urged to check stored grain

     With the arrival of planting season, producers need to regularly check their stored grain in order to prevent spoilage. According to Charles Hurburgh, grain quality and handling specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, producers need to double the frequency they inspect their grain because this is a high-risk year and the condition of stored grain could deteriorate quickly.

Leadership Conference honors Fellinger, Iowa Degree recipients

     Quinton Fellinger represented the Monticello FFA Chapter as a Star finalist in Agriculture Placement, while eight members received their Iowa FFA degrees, at the 89th Iowa FFA Leadership Conference held April 9-11 at Iowa State University.

Prairie Hill

     The regular meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was held at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center on April 17.

     The meeting was called to order by Chloe Gray at 6:19 p.m. The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Bella Mullen. Roll call was: “Name your favorite TV shows,” and it was answered by 29 members. Four visitors were present.

GAP videos can assist growers

     The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach food safety team has produced a series of three videos to help fruit and vegetable growers understand and implement good agricultural practices (GAP).

     The GAP videos are available online and replace the day-long Iowa Level 1 GAP program. However, face-to-face workshops for groups can still be scheduled upon request. The videos range from 25 to 50 minutes in length, are free and do not need to be watched in one sitting.

Agriculture education award presented to MV

     The Iowa Council on Agricultural Education awarded Maquoketa Valley Community School District in Delhi with the 2017 Excellence in Agriculture Education award. The award was presented at the Iowa FFA Leadership Conference held in Ames, Iowa April 9-11.

     Soybean prices may be trending down due to large domestic and global supplies, but Iowa Soybean Association leaders (ISA) are optimistic about the future since demand remains strong.

BeefMeets events are scheduled

     We’ve all heard the saying, “Tough times never last, but tough people do.”

     Many farmers are experiencing tough times in this economic downturn, and the second annual Iowa Cattlemen’s Association BeefMeets are designed to help cattle producers weather the storm.

     BeefMeets will be held June 13 in Dubuque, June 15 in Ottumwa, June 20 in Creston and June 22 in Le Mars. Registration is $25 for Iowa Cattlemen’s Association members. The day-long events begin with registration at 8:30 a.m. and end following a “beef social” at 4 p.m.

IPPA to hold Best Tenderloin Contest

     The Iowa Pork Producers Association is ready to find out who consumers think has Iowa’s Best Breaded Pork Tenderloin in 2017.

     IPPA will launch the 15th annual contest on April 19 and give consumers the opportunity to nominate their favorite tenderloin restaurant, café or pub. Nominations can be submitted at www.iowapork.org or by using the form in the May issue of the Iowa Pork Producer magazine. The nomination process closes on June 7. Nominations are limited to one per household.
