Prairie Hill

     The regular meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was held at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center on June 19, 2017.

     The meeting was called to order by Caleb Hogan at 6:15 p.m. The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Claire Hogan. Roll call was “Fun things,” and was answered by 23 members. Six visitors were present.

Haig addresses water quality, NAFTA at Farm Bureau meeting

     Jones County Farm Bureau held its 101st annual meeting last week, June 13, at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center in Monticello.

     The guest speaker for the evening was Mike Naig, Iowa’s Deputy Secretary of Agriculture.

     “It’s great to be on the Great Jones County Fairgrounds tonight. We hear great things coming from here,” praised Naig.

Weets to serve as SWCD intern

     The Jones Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) commissioners have hired Stacey Weets to serve as a summer Conservation Intern.

Cooper's attention, work with beef cattle help prepare him for shows

     The work Gavin Cooper does with beef cattle in preparation for fair shows is more than early mornings, hard work and a months-long commitment.

     It’s also a bond.

     “It’s almost like you and your pet,” Cooper said. “By the county fair they’re used to you coming up and petting them and talking to them. Our past ones that we’ve shown are out in the herd now. The cool thing is, you can go out there and pet them, and they’ll come up to you, and let you scratch them.”

Monck's upbringing prepares her for owning a farm

     Nicole Monck, 22, grew up on her family’s century farm in rural Monticello. She is the fifth generation to work in the Monck beef operation.

     Now, Monk owns and operates her own farm.

     Monck bought her farm, which belonged to the Weers estate, when she was 21 years old.

     “It’s 3 miles west of here,” she said while sitting down for the interview at her parents’ home. “That’s just close enough.”

Gadient keeps busy as Jones County Dairy Princess

     If you spend any time at all with Jones County Dairy Princess Grace Gadient, two things are blatantly obvious: She knows her stuff when it comes to the dairy industry, and she has a passion for the business.

     Gadient was crowned Dairy Princess in February of this year during the Jones County Dairy Banquet. She said after attending the banquet last year, she offered to serve as Dairy Princess this year if no one came forward.

     “Last summer, I was told I was selected,” she said.

IGBA award honors Eilers family

     He knew something was up.

     On April 1, Don Eilers of Scotch Grove had two meetings at the Pizza Ranch in Independence.

     Eilers, a board member of the Iowa Guernsey Breeders Association, first attended a district-level meeting in one of the restaurant’s smaller rooms.

     The second one was much larger, involving the same organization, but at the statewide level.

     “I walked into the state meeting, and all my kids were sitting there,” Eilers said.

FSA nomination period to begin

     The U.S. Department of Agriculture has announced that the nomination period for local Farm Service Agency (FSA) county committees begins on Thursday, June 15.

     “County committees allow farmers and ranchers to make important decisions about how federal farm programs are administered locally to best serve their needs,” said acting FSA administrator Chris Beyerhelm.
