Youth horticulture workshops planned

     Youth horticulture workshops are continuing in Monticello for all students in grades 3-12.

     Learn how to raise fresh produce without a big garden space. Your patio or deck will work. Any enrolled 4-H member can participate in the Horticulture/Garden project and exhibit at the fair in the 4-H Horticulture show. Enrolled 4-H members are also eligible to exhibit in the 4-H Horticulture show at the Iowa State Fair.

Jones County Central

     The Jones County Central 4-H Club held its regular monthly meeting on Sunday, March 5, 2017 at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center in Monticello.

     The meeting was called to order at 1:12 p.m. by president Elizabeth Creveling. Gracie Henderson led the Pledge of Allegiance. The Secretary’s Report and Treasurer’s Report were given and approved. Roll call was: “Who is one famous person that you would like to be or meet for one day.” It was answered by 12 members. There were three leaders and four guests present.

'Last chance' CIC is planned

     Jones County will offer a “Last Chance” Private Pesticide Applicator Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) for private pesticide applicators on April 14 at 9 a.m. at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center in Monticello.

     This program is shown in cooperation with the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP).

Legislation aims to support young people in ag

     U.S. Senators Jerry Moran (R-Kan.) and Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) and U.S. Representative Michael McCaul (R-Texas) have introduced legislation to support young people in agriculture by creating a tax exemption for the first $5,000 of income students 18 years of age or younger earn from projects completed through 4-H or FFA.

Prairie Hill

     The regular meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was held March 20, 2017 at the Citizens State Bank Youth Development Center.

     The meeting was called to order by Chloe Gray at 6:18 p.m. The Pledge to the American Flag was led by Claire Hogan. Roll call was: “Name your favorite season.” It was answered by 37 members. Seven visitors were present.
