Dairy webinar to focus on climate predictions

   The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach dairy team monthly webinar series continues Jan. 18 with a focus on the climate and weather predictions for the 2023 growing season.

   Dennis Todey, director of the USDA Climate Hub in Ames, will lead the presentation, from noon to 1 p.m. Todey is a native Iowan with his bachelor of science and doctorate degrees from Iowa State University in meteorology and agricultural meteorology.

Lovell Lions

   The regular meeting of the Lovell Lions 4-H club was held at the Youth Development Center on Dec. 4, 2022.

   The meeting was called to order by Will Sperfslage at 5:03 p.m. Roll call was answered by seven members. One guest was present. Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Henry Wolken and approved by all. The treasurer’s report was given. Balance on hand is $67.48.

'It was time;' Lahr retires after 47 years at Bodensteiner Implement

   Dan Lahr had a quick answer when asked what he would miss the most at Bodensteiner Implement Company of Monticello.

   “The people; the customers and the employees, he said. “I’ve made a lot of friends and worked with a lot of people.”

   Lahr, a service technician, has retired from Bodensteiner after 47 years of employment. His last day at the Monticello store was Dec. 30.

Farm margin workshops set

   With tight farm margins anticipated in the future, farmers have much to consider to keep their family farms viable. To help navigate this pressure, Iowa Farm Bureau and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach are hosting “Managing 2023 Farm Margins” workshops across the state.

   The workshop closest to Monticello will be Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the Hartland Acres Agribition Center in Independence.

   Other workshops are scheduled for Feb. 2 in Nevada, Feb. 6 in Atlantic, Feb. 7 in Storm Lake and Feb. 20 in Washington.

Signups begin for IFBF's Young Farmer Conference

   Farmers and agribusiness professionals, ages 18-35, are invited to attend Iowa Farm Bureau Federation’s Young Farmer Conference Jan. 27-28 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines.

   “This year’s conference theme is ‘Our Roots Run Deep,’ ” said Megan Hansen, Young Farmer Advisory Committee chair and Pottawattamie County farmer.

ANF contest offers Hawkeye tickets

   Iowa Farm Bureau Federation and University of Iowa Athletics are teaming up to give one Hawkeye fan four courtside tickets to the Iowa vs. Maryland men’s basketball game on Jan. 15.

   In addition, the winner of the America Needs Farmers (ANF) Hawkeye Hoops Fan Experience will receive four ‘VIP’ Feller Club passes, a Hawkeye locker room tour, parking and hotel accommodations, a Fran McCaffery-signed basketball and ANF apparel. 

Stage is set for Iowa Pork Congress '23

   The 2023 Iowa Pork Congress will be held Jan. 25 and 26 at the Iowa Events Center in Des Moines. It will be the 50th pork congress that involves a trade show, educational sessions, and the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) annual meeting, which will be held Jan. 24. IPPA organizes the event, which is North America’s largest winter swine trade show and conference.

   IPPA President Kevin Rasmussen of Goldfield said pork producers from around the country have attended many of the Iowa Pork Congress events through the years.

Naig urges participation in ag census

   Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig is encouraging Iowa farmers and producers to participate in the 2022 Census of Agriculture, which is underway across the nation through Feb. 6, 2023.

   The Census of Agriculture, which is conducted every five years by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), is the nation’s most comprehensive count of America’s farms and ranches, the people who operate them, and the crops and livestock they raise.

   The Iowa State University Extension and Outreach dairy team will continue its dairy goat webinar series in 2023 with all webinar dates and topics listed below. All webinars will be from noon to 1:15 p.m. and are free to attend.

Prairie Hill

   Following a cookie decorating activity, the December meeting of the Prairie Hill 4-H Club was called to order at 6:10 p.m. by Leah Koehler, President, on Monday, Dec. 19, 2022 at the Youth Development Center.

   The pledge to the American Flag was led by Lincoln Schneiter. The roll call question of “What is your favorite Christmas movie?” was answered by 34 members. Eight visitors were present.
